Fight For YOU.

Recently, I saw a Facebook memory regarding one of my clinical rotations. When thinking about that experience, I remembered this story that had stuck with me.

A patient had been involved in an accident and lost all independent function. They could not walk, stand, change positions, etc without multiple people assisting. They could not talk, use a bathroom, eat, breathe without people assisting or a machine. They had lived such a full life prior to the accident, and not surprisingly, were having a difficult time coping with the fact that they depended on others now.

Over many weeks, they became stronger, and that meant more participation in therapy. We had developed a stronger rapport and relationship, and I could see how much next steps weighedon them. Plans were being discussed over them, and the next step being considered was not a spot they wanted to go. Unfortunately, they did not have much choice. They felt like they would go to this next spot and never leave.

On the day of their departure, I saw them for therapy. We talked about how they felt about this next place. They had made great strides in our clinic, though still very much assisted. But, there was more fire from them.

At the end of our session, my parting words were, “Push your team and yourself. If you want to get out, you will have to work harder than you think. Your team may not push you. You will have to push them and you. You can do it. You will have to do it.”

No one is going to do the work for you.

While you can put the right mentors, guides, and coaches in place on your team, you also need to be an active teammate. Ultimately, you have to commit and make your wellness goal(s) happen.

You CAN do it. There is so much information available at your fingertips. You know, just like we do, that it is not the lack of information holding you back from being healthier.

It is YOU. It will be hard. But it will be worth it.

We are ready to be on your team WITH you. We will push you. But not in a “kick your ass workout” way. Well, ok. Probably that, as well.

You will be pushed to grow. To look at what is important and get after it. Because, you are important, and being mindful of your wellness habits and improving those are directly related to your future self and independence.

You GET the opportunity now to improve your wellness. Will you fight for it?

Cheers,

Dr. Ana
